Review of the shop
Fujitsu Lifebook Laptop Computer S6120 Notebook (1.4GHz Pentium M, 256MB, 40GB, CD-RW/DVD, WIndows XP, 13'' TFT)
Our review system had Windows XP with Service Pack 1 installed and included 256MB of 266MHz DDR memory. The RAM roster is expandable to a maximum of 1GB in two Sodimm slots. However, unlike most other Centrino-based notebooks IT Week Labs has tested, the S-6120 uses Intel's 855GM chipset and this uses Intel's onboard graphics system, which takes between 8MB and 64MB from system memory.
The 13.3in TFT display has a native resolution of 1024x768 in 32bit colour. In common with most current notebooks, a DVD/CD-RW combo drive is included as standard. The combo drive fitted to the S-6120 is a Toshiba SD-R2412, while the 30GB hard disk is a Fujitsu MHS2040AT D model.
Fujitsu Siemens also offers an entry-level system, the S-6120D, that has no 802.11b or Bluetooth adapters and uses a slower 1.4GHz processor variant, that is substantially cheaper.
Performance was as expected for a system built around a 1.6GHz Intel Pentium-M processor, the S-6120 giving a Business Winstone 2002 score of 25.8. The 4.0Ah lithium ion battery gave a working life of two hours and 50 minutes running our BatteryMark 4.01 test, with the screen at full brightness. Halving the brightness gave an extra 30 minutes of battery life.
One of the quirks of Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebooks is a small LCD panel above the keyboard used to indicate, for instance, Caps Lock state, hard disk activity and battery power status. Many notebooks use LEDs to indicate such activity and they are usually visible even with the screen closed - unlike the S-6120's LCD panel.
As well as its network connectivity options, the S-6120 also offers a single PC Card slot, two USB 2.0 ports, one mini-Firewire port, VGA adapter, microphone, headphone and line-in jacks, as well as a Kensington lock slot and a hard on/off wireless switch. There is also a connection to attach the S-6120 to a docking station.
The keyboard has a relatively good action, although page up/down and home/end actions each require dual key presses. The cursor is controlled using a TrackPad system which also has an integrated scroll button.
BIOS options, accessible using F2 are very comprehensive and give extra functionality to the S-6120. For example, there is an option to boot from removable media, like a USB key, when the supervisor password for access to the BIOS settings is set. Once set, users can boot from a USB flash memory key of any size.
The S-6120 has four numbered quick start buttons next to the LCD panel and are all configurable to launch an application, but they also double up as PIN code entry buttons, along with the 'enter' button to the right. A user PIN code can be set up to lock the notebook on standby or after power off, and an administrator password can also be set for use in corporate environments.
Software pre-loaded with the S-6120 is Ahead's Nero 5 Burning ROM and InterVideo's WinDVD 4 for DVD playback. InCD packet writing software is also included as well as InterVideo's WinCinema Manager. The PlugFree program is a software gem, managing the S-6120's network connections intuitively and making Bluetooth and 802.11b connectivity easier for non-technical users.
